Tear – Lent Day 6

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Tear (rend) your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.  Joel 2:12-13

“My heart is breaking because I have sinned. I am the worst of sinners.” Paul was clear in his description of himself as he wrote to Timothy, his son in the faith.

The recognition of sin is truly heart rending, especially when found in the depths of one’s own heart.

One act of awareness of sin was to tear the clothes as confession for sin. Joel spoke of a new concept; tear your heart and not your garment! In other words, allow your heart to break.

Just as tearing one’s garment was a visible admission to others of sin’s recognition and confession, the torn heart was visible to God.

Awareness of sin leads to confession. Is your heart broken? Have you torn your heart in grief over sin?

God is the healer of hearts. Let Him heal your torn heart.
